Miss Martens was born in California, but grew up in Nebraska.  Her parents are both former Lutheran teachers and her brother is a Lutheran principal. She graduated from Concordia College, Seward, Nebraska and has hours toward her Master's Degree. She is a member of the Lutheran Education Association and the Association Curriculum Development.
